Jazz Quintet

a brass quintet by Joyce Soloman Moorman

Flavored by jazz idioms but built upon a twelve-tone row (presented after the introduction in a rhythmic motive that pervades the work by the tuba and trombone), Jazz Quintet still finds many tonal moments in the way Moorman manipulates the content of the row. Many mute colors are used, including a tubist’s version of a wah-wah mute (which can be built from a plastic trash can lid).

Jazz Quintet was composed in 1979, and premiered by members of the Brooklyn Philharmonic. It is featured on the Rose City Brass Quintet’s album Disquiet.
